International Relations Theory● Grand theory / pardigon
○ Core assumptions: cannot be proven or disproven
■ Realism (Realpolitik hawks) by Thucydides: greek general during
Peloponnesian war / a theory solely concerned with military power of
countries and their comparative rankings to one another
■ Liberalism (Idealism doves): much more recent primarily with arguments
for open markets and free trade (connections)
■ Marxism (Structuralism): (rich exploiting the poor)
● Rules for the theories
○ Need to understand all but pick one, for the purpose of understanding the
argument of your opponent
○ You cannot mix any of the theories -- George W. Bush did this / NeoCons / Iraq
war
○ You cannot misread theory -- Lyndon B. Johnson did this with the Vietnamese
war
○ You must get your timing right -- Jimmy Carter did not do this
● Presidential History
○ Nixon and (first) Bush
■ Absolutely ready to be presidents with their international relation
knowledge
■ Nixon: 8 years Vice President
● Rogue State: a middle power, expansionist (invades its neighbors or supports terrorism),
pursues weapons of mass destruction (WMD), anti-Western/anti-USA
○ Iran: developed nuclear program
○ Iraq: USA invaded
○ Libya: buckled to USA demands, agreed to IAEA inspections, surrendered power,
we still invaded
○ North Korea: went nuclear, because they understood rogue states get invaded
regardless
