Why are you learning this subject?
International contacts and contacts with people from other languages are very
common today. If you want to broaden your horizons through direct contact with
cultures from other languages and play an active role in our society, you have to
learn foreign languages.

What do you need to learn?
For the French third degree aso Modern Languages exam, you must master these
skills globally at level B1 of the CEFR, but some texts in the specific section may
be situated at level B2. In the following tables you will find what you must be able
to do for each skill and what you must do on the exam to prove that you can do it.

,To reach level B1 globally, at which you must master these five skills, you
must know sufficient grammar and vocabulary . Final term 42 indicates which
knowledge elements you must definitely acquire. In Van Dale Grammar French
(see learning materials) you can look up which grammatical contents are expected
at B1 level.

If you are going to use that knowledge, you must also consciously think about your
language and language use in order to strengthen your language proficiency.

You have chosen the Modern Languages study program, so you have a special
interest in the phenomenon of language in all its facets. The specific section
responds to this and aims to both broaden and deepen everything that is described
in the listening/reading, writing/speaking and conversation sections.
The broadening means that the range of texts is wider than in non-modern
language courses, and we also expect you to be able to communicate on a wide
range of subjects with a sufficiently rich and nuanced use of language.
The deepening relates to your knowledge and insight into the relationship between
language, communication and culture. We also expect a more in-depth reflection
on language as a system. You will find more information about this in the section
'Specific section'.

Further on, you will find concrete learning resources that can help you to assess
your current level and further develop your skills to reach level B1.
Listen and read
You must be able to understand messages from both written texts (e.g. a newspaper
article) and spoken texts (e.g. a commercial). This mainly concerns texts that you
may encounter in everyday life, but narrative and artistic-literary texts may also be
discussed. The concrete characteristics of these texts can be found in the final
objectives.
For listening, you can get both audio and video fragments on the exam.
What should you be able to do?
What should you do?
understand

, determine the subject of a text

present the main idea of a text

follow the train of thought of a text

select relevant information from a text, including information relating to cultural
expressions

recognize the text structure and coherence
analyze and structure
to organize the content of a text in a clear manner
compare and evaluate
to form an opinion about a text
You will have to do this for different types of text. Each type of text has a specific
purpose. An informative text such as a news report wants to convey information to
enrich your knowledge. A prescriptive text, for example a leaflet for a medicine,
wants to influence you to do something or to do something in a certain way. In an
argumentative text such as a discussion, the author builds up a line of reasoning to
convince you. A narrative text wants to tell facts and events to take you along in a
story; an example is a travelogue. Finally, an artistic-literary text expresses feelings
and thoughts in a creative way. These types of texts, for example a fragment from a
novel, want to stimulate an aesthetic language experience.
The following table gives some concrete examples of spoken and written texts in a
specific communication situation that you should be able to understand. This is not
an exhaustive list, only an illustration.
