Infrastructure- the underlying foundation or basic framework of
something. (It’s the backbone that a business is built on)
Information Technology- the study, design, development, implantation,
support, and management of computer-based information systems
(particularly software and hardware)
Paradigm Shift- an important change that happens when the usual way
of thinking about or doing something is replaced by a new and
different way.
6 Components of Information Technology (IT): These all work
together to provide the connectivity and collaboration necessary for
businesses to utilize IT, but each component cannot stand alone.
1. Hardware: makes up the physical part of a computer
(CPU, motherboard, keyboard, disk drives)
2. Software: set of computer instructions that tell the
computer how to perform tasks
a. Application: software that a user chooses that
accomplishes a specific task for the user.
b. Utility: performs background tasks to analyze and
maintain computer with little to no interaction from
the user
c. System: supports a computers basic function such as
scheduling tasks, executing applications, controlling
peripherals. (operating system)
3. Networks: consists of two or more devices such as routers,
switches, and communication links that allow the computer
systems to communicate with each other no mater the
distance “Backbone of IT”
4. Data: after finances; data is a very valuable asset a
company can acquire. Its information held in databases for
different purposes.
5. People: key to an IT infrastructure. Can be anyone from IT
gurus to someone that uses the system to perform their daily
functions.
6. Process: the final component of IT Infrastructure.
Functions the end user performs in their daily business.

company efficiency, cost savings, and improved customer

Switches- filter the information to the correct part of network

Hub- are common points of connection on a network

Client/server- information is stored in a central location

Mainframe Computers- massive room-sized computers that process
and store enormous amounts of information.
Midrange Computers- (sometimes called minicomputers) less
powerful and smaller in physical size but does the same as a
mainframe computer, but on a smaller scale. Minicomputer does
the same as mainframe but on a smaller scale.
Microcomputers (laptops, desktops, handheld) small computer
unable to process large amounts of data or transactions.
