Discussion Question #3 What Issues Would Receive More Attention with a More Equitable

Gender Balance in Government?

Having more women in government could shake things up and lead to important changes. Issues

that disproportionately affect women, like paid family leave and affordable healthcare might

finally get the attention they deserve. We might also see a bigger focus on stopping gender based

violence and protecting reproductive rights. With more women at the table we would likely get a

more refined understanding of marginalized communities problems and a more thoughtful

approach to solving them.

Family and Medical Leave Policies

With more women in government family and medical leave policies would become a

much bigger priority. Women are often the primary caregivers, whether it is for kids or elderly

relatives, and this tends to impact their careers. As a result a lot of women opt for part time work

to balance their responsibilities and they are more likely to push for policies that offer paid leave

to help them manage these demands. (U.S. Department of Labor, 2023). If more women held

public office, there would likely be greater pressure to implement paid family leave policies that

would allow working families to better balance their jobs and personal lives.

In countries where women hold more government positions like Finland and New Zealand they

have made family friendly policies a top priority. This includes focusing on caregiving and

helping families in need. (Rodriguez & Patel, 2023). This suggests that increasing the number of

women in US government could lead to similar results making a more supportive environment

for families and encouraging progress.
