The Crusades are considered to be a crucial event between the Muslim population and the
Christians about taking over the Holy land , with both religious groups going so far as to kill off
and keep Europe in ruins due to desperation of taking over Jerusalem. Although the Crusades
were initiated by the Roman Catholic Church to force out Islamic rule out of lands sanctioned by
, the Catholic church. In the text Pope Urban II’s Speech at the Count of Clermont by Robert the
Monk, Pope Urban II states that the land of the Franks being too narrow for its large population
is a rather significant issue for the Crusaders due to the Muslims having destroyed the Greek
empire, and taken over the holy land , along with it being the will of God to take over the Holy
land, and lastly the liberation of the Christians
The Muslims had taken over the Holy Land of Jerusalem , destroyed the Byzantine empire and
ruined the altars of the churches which is why the Pope had grown to hate them and wanted
vengenance. They also had held some of the Christians captive in their land and forcefully killed
them using crule torture methods such as fire and pillage which destroyed the population. This
shows how vengeful the Pope is towards the Muslims by the way he uses certain terms and
addresses the Muslims as that are ruining the holy land and how he addresses the Franks as being
the race that is chosen and beloved by God which clearly shows how he thinks that the Christians
are the ones that god chose to be on the Holy land , and not the the Muslims. Pope Urban II also
addressed grievances towards them < a race from the kingdom of the Persians, an accursed race,
a race wholly alienated from God, a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit
was not steadfast with God < (Robert the Monk , Readings in European History) which shows
how he uses these types of phrases as propaganda to make the common people and other people
in the audience feel moved about fighting the Muslims , also to prove his point about how the
Muslims are very cruel and unjust towards the Christians by describing how they treat the
captured people who are Christian especially women. He especially mentions how it was God
that desired for the common people to get their holy land back just like how their ancestors
conquered the land that is now theirs.
