Service Models Ally, Bicultural, Conduit, Communication Facilitator
Defer to DHH as the expert on DHH culture and ASL.
Attempt at being transparent about the larger systems at play, and empowers the
Ally Model
DHH to chose the next move.
One who supports Deaf individuals in their own struggle for liberation.
Seeks equivalence of both sides.
It's almost impossible for hearing to become an expert in ASL and DHH culture (may
overstep bounds).
Bicultural Model
More common in education: ASL is primary language
Philosophy of Interpreting has emerged in an effort to hit the mid-point between the
two extremes of over-involved (helper) and invisibility (machine)
Machine
Basic/Default Role
Literal translation
Conduit Model
Intent was to avoid injustices under the HELPER model.
Ex: terp doesn't reply when a rando hearing person asks "how long did it take you to
become an interpreter"
Finally ASL Interpreters are seen as professionals.
Communication Facilitator Strives to ensure communication is accessible between DHH and hearing.
No cultural mediation
