When social media first started in 2005 5% of Americans used social media. Today, that

percentage has risen to 72%, with young teens providing the highest percentage (Social

Media Fact Sheet, 2023). Not only are the results accurate and recent, but the study has also

been going on for 18 years giving an in-depth look into the growth of social media. The fact

that communication via texts has changed using abbreviations such as: LOL, BRB, TTYL has

started to degrade the quality of communication that voice provides. According to (Moody,

2021). "Reducing interactions to a few choice words on a screen can lead to

misunderstandings and curtailed conversations." How can social media negatively affect

adolescent communication is my research question. It is especially important to avoid those

problems. Social media form of communication is primarily texting. That has caused a

reduction in verbal communication and structured text communication. Instead of the vocal

ending of a conversation, you can end the conversation with a simple "LOL." I chose how

social media can be negative for youth communication because I feel enthusiastic about

effective, proper communication. Social Media is enveloping the youth and some adults like a

tidal wave. Sweeping them up into a world of emoticons, non-proper abbreviations, and

taking away vocal communication and replacing it with typing/text communication. Though
