ASBESTOS TEST STUDY GUIDE
ANSWER defines Category 1 nonfriable asbestos-containing material (AMC)
as asbestos-containing packages, gaskets, resilient floor covering, and asphalt
roofing products containing more than 1 percent asbestos as determined using
the method specified in appendix E, subpart E, 40 CRF part 763, section 1,
Polarized Light Microscopy.
Category II nonfirable AMC - ANSWER means any material, excluding
Category I nonfirable AMC, containing more than 1 percent asbestos as
determined using the method specified in appendix E, subpart E, 40 CRF part
763, section 1, Polarized Light Microscopy that, when dry, cannot be crumbled,
pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure.
Demolition - ANSWER is the destruction of any load-supporting structural part
of a facility, as well as any related handling operations, or the international
burning of any facility.
Friable asbestos material - ANSWER meaning any substance containing more
than 1 per cent asbestos as determined by the technique provided in appendix E,
subpart E, 40 CRF part 763, section 1, Polarized Light Microscopy, and which,
when dry, can be crumbled, crushed, or reduced to powder by hand pressure. If
the asbestos content is less than 10% as determined by a method other than
point counting using polarized light microscopy (PLM), double-check the
asbestos content using PLM.
Regulated asbestos-containing material (RAMC) - ANSWER means (a) friable
asbestos material, (b) Category I nonfriable AMC that has become friable, (c)
Category I nonfriable AMC that will be or has been subjected to sanding,
grinding, cutting, or abrading, or (d) Category II nonfriable ACM that has
become crumbled, pulverized, or recorded, or reduced to powder by the forces
expected to act on the material during demolition or renovation operations
regulated by
, Renovations - ANSWER refers to any alteration of a facility or one or more
facility components, including the stripping or removal of RAMC from a
component. Operations involving the destruction or removal of load-supporting
structural members during demolitions.
Visible emissions - ANSWER refers to any emissions that are visually apparent
without the use of instruments that originate from RAMC or asbestos-
containing waste material, or any asbestos milling, manufacturing, or
fabrication operations. This does not contain condensed and uncombined water
vapour.
61.145 Standard for demolition and refurbishment (a) 1 (i) - ANSWER At least
80 linear meters (260 linear feet) of pipelines or at least 15 square meters (160
square feet) of other facility components.
61.145 Standard for demolition and reconstruction (a) 1 (ii) - ANSWER At least
1 cubic meter (35 cubic feet) of facility components where the length or area
could not be previously determined.
When referring to school buildings, "asbestos-containing material" (AMC)
refers to any material or product having more than 1% asbestos.
Asbestos-containing building material (ACBM) in schools refers to surface
AMC, thermal system insulation, or miscellaneous AMC found on internal
structural members of school buildings.
Functional space in schools refers to any room, group of rooms, or
homogeneous area, including classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and
