When babies are born, crucial tests are done to
evaluate their well-being to ensure any issue that can
bring serious developmental problems is addressed at
the onset. The Apgar text is an important assessment
given to babies immediately after birth. The test
evaluates key baby processes such as; muscle tone,
heartbeat, and other indicators to find if additional
clinical care or emergency support is required.
The Apgar score assessment is performed twice within
the first minute after birth and repeated 5 five minutes
later. If the baby experiences health problems, the test
can be evaluated again. The Apgar score assesses five
critical parameters to evaluate the baby's health. The
parameters tested are measured on a scale of 0 to 2.
The best score for the Apgar score is rated at 2.
The Apgar is an acronym for; Appearance (skin color),
Pulse (the heat rate), Grimace response (reflexes),
Activity (muscle tone), and Respiration (the breathing
speed and effort). Health professionals such as;
doctors, nurses, and midwives compute the five
parameters to get the Apgar score. The highest score
for each parameter is 2. Thus, the score ranges
between zero and ten for a cumulative score.
