superficial or deep digital flexor tendon, Figure 1. When either of these
tendons swell it causes the leg to look "bowed." The bow can appear
anywhere from the knee or hock to the pastern region
Bone spavin Right Ans - Bone spavin is osteoarthritis, or the final phase of
degenerative joint disease (DJD), in the lower three hock joints.
Contracted heels Right Ans - Contracted heels in a horse are characterized
by a shift of the hoof and a subsequent narrowing of the foot. Primary cases of
contracted heels result from incorrect trimming, overgrown hoofs, or
unbalanced feet with either long toes or low heels.
When a horse has contracted hoofs, constriction of the blood vessels, nerves,
bones, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments within the hoof can create problems
and pain. In an attempt to ease the pain, the horse favors the hind region of
the hoof and the coffin bone stands more steeply.
Laminitis (founder) Right Ans - Inflammation of the laminae between hoof
wall and distal phalanx (hoof capsule), which encases the coffin bone.
Fistula Right Ans - A fistula is an abnormal passage that leads from an
infection within the horse's body to the outside of the body

back surface where the deep flexor tendon passes over the bone. Causes pain
and lameness.
Navicular Syndrome Right Ans - Inflammation or degeneration of the
navicular bone and/or surrounding structures in the front feet
Several different problems can lead to pain and lameness in the
navicular/caudal heel area, including inflammation and injury of the
supporting ligaments, problems in the flexor surface of the bone or flexor
tendon itself in that area, and/or problems within the navicular bone itself.
These problems are more common in the performance horse, and in general
are the most common cause of "chronic" forelimb lameness in the horse.
