2) The role of the lacZ enzyme is to separate a lactose into usable glucose that is readilyavailable and galactose. b) When lactose is not present, a component called B- galactosidase is
not produced. c) The role of gene regulation is to turn genes on and off, this will help organisms
respond to their environment. When gene expressions are controlled, cells are given permission
to produce specific types of proteins when and where they are needed.
3) The role of the lacI protein also known as the lac repressor is to attach to the operator region.
This prevents RNA polymerase from transcribing the lac operon genes. b) When the lac
repressor is produced, the transcription is regulated which makes lacZ mRNA.
4) Lactose is a component that starts the whole process, lactose changes the form of the lac
repressor after attaching itself to it. The lac repressor lactose cannot attach itself to the operator
region. RNA polymerase attaches and transcribes operon. The translation of mRNA produces
B-galactosidase, permease and transacetylase.
