Comprising the Brain and the Spinal Cord has 2 main function:
Control behaviour and the regulation of bodies physiological processes
What is the brain's function?
The brain receives and transmits information to and from the Sensory Receptors (Eyes, Ears, Skin ) and
the Motor Receptors
What is the Peripheral Nervous System?
A part of the nervous system that is outside the brain and spinal cord and are separated -
Somatic Nervous System
Autonomic Nervous System
What is the Somatic Nervous System?
Made up to 12 pairs of Cranic Nerves (Nerves which emerge from the underside of the brain) and 31
pairs of spinal nerves (Neves which come from the spinal cord)
Responsible for carrying sensory & motor information to and from the CNS
, What is the Autonomic Nervous System?
Governs the brains involuntary activities
eg Stress, Heartbeat and Self Regulating (Homeostasis)
This is divided into The Sympathetic Branch (Fight and flight) and Parasympathetic branch (Rest and
digestion)
What is the Sympathetic Nervous System?
Primarily involved in responses that help us respond to emergencies (Fight & Flight)
This happens by increasing heart rate + blood pressure + dilating blood vesicles in the muscles and
neurons travel to organs and glands to prepare them when we are under threat
What is the Parasympathetic Nervous System?
After an individual enters the fight and flight response, Once the threat has been neutralised they would
go onto calming down. This would happen as this system would decrease the heart rate and reduce the
blood pressure and a benefit would be that digestion would resume
Division of the Nervous System
What are neurons?
They are cells of the nervous system that process and transmit messages though electrical or chemical
signals
They are specialised cells that send electrical pluses to and from the CNS
When Neurons are in their resting state, inside the cell is negatively charged
