If the solvent level in the developing chamber was more than 1.5cm high and the sample
spots were below the solvent line, the sample spots would dissolve in the solvent. This
would prevent the spots from moving up, since there would not be any distinguished spots
for the compounds in the solutions to use to move up the paper using capillary action.
