A. Discuss the need for change for the company in the scenario using either the systems contingency

Based on the organizational life cycle model, this company is currently in the second stage, which is
growth through direction. What tells me that the company is in phase 2 is that this company has a
hierarchical structure that also uses top-down management styles. This is fine for a company that is early
on in its development as it is efficient and company members have strong directives to help with
efficiency, however autonomy and flexibility is an issue. With how fast this company is growing, and
with how many employees it has, many different points of view that could be useful for the company’s
growth will be overlooked within its current phase. This current phase also does not help employees
grow, and a company that doesn’t help the employees grow is also a company that employees often
don’t want to work for. Retaining staff could then become an issue. The company will need to create a
more intuitive management structure, and a more staff-friendly environment as well if the company
wants to reach its full potential, and for these reasons, change is needed.


B. Describe the differences between a learning organization and a traditional organization.


A learning organization is an organization with the “big picture” in mind. These organizations are quicker
to adapt to their environment, and change is a welcome thing. Creativity and new thinking are
encouraged in these organizations, and this often helps the organization adapt to changes. Learning
organizations also use the past to help them with the future by reflecting on the lessons learned in
former scenarios. Adaptation and change are much easier to achieve in a learning organization.


On the other hand, traditional organizations have a much more structured approach. Hierarchical
management structures are often found in a traditional organization, and management is encouraged to
make the decisions for the employees. Given this information, employees are not empowered to make
decisions or risks, but encouraged to do what their job entails: nothing more and nothing less.
