NU 578 Unit 1 Test Questions and
Answers All Correct

What are the effects of simulation of dopamine receptors? - Answer- Dilation of kidneys
to enhance renal perfusion (helps prevent kidney failure during times of shock)

What are cholinesterase inhibitors? - Answer- help stop acetylcholine from being broken
down by acetylcholinesterase (known as cholinesterase)

This means more acetylcholine will be available to simulate receptors

What is selectivity vs nonselectivity? - Answer- Selectivity = works on one receptor

Nonselectivity = works on 2+ receptors (May not be ideal because it can help in one
area, but you may not want the effects of the other receptor it activates)

What are adverse effects of alpha blockers? (5) - Answer- Orthostatic hypotension
(vasodilation drops BP too much)

Reflex tachycardia (blood pressure drops so much that heart rate picks up to
compensate)

Nasal congestion (dilation leads to increased congestion to nose)

Inhibition of ejaculation

Sodium retention and increased blood volume (d/t decreased BP, body tries to
compensate by retaining sodium & water to raise BP - usually diuretic is given as well in
this case)

What is the difference between first generation, second generation, and third generation
beta blockers? - Answer- 1st = nonselective = blocks beta1 and beta2

2nd = selective = blocks only beta1 at usual doses

3rd = vasodilating = produces nonselective or cardioselective beta blockade

What are adverse effects of beta2 blockers? (2) - Answer- Bronchoconstriction (not
good for people with asthma!)

Hypoglycemia (d/t inhibition of glycogenolysis - not good for people with diabetes!)

, What are the effects of a1 agonists? (5) - Answer- — DAVE doesn't pee —

Dilation of eyes

Arterioles constrict (mucous membranes, skin, viscera)

Veins constrict

Ejaculation

Contraction of prostatic capsule & contraction of trigone and sphincter (person can't
pee)

What are the effects of a1 antagonists? - Answer- Dilation of arterioles & veins (lower
BP, improve blood flow and decrease pain in Raynaud's disease)

Dilation of prostatic capsule (helps men with BPH)

Prevent excess release of catecholamines (epi & nori; helps with pheochromocytoma -
a tumor that releases excess catecholamines; can be given preop before this tumor
type is removed)

What are the effects of a2 antagonists? - Answer- Allow continual release of
acetylcholine (normally agonists will block the release)

What are effects of B1 antagonists? (2) - Answer- Decreased HR, force of contraction,
AV node conduction speed

No release of renin (so no increase in BP)

What are effects of B2 antagonists? - Answer- No fight or flight symptoms

(No increased HR, no dilation of vessels)

What are the effects of a2 agonists? (1) - Answer- Inhibition of neurotransmitter (epi or
nori release)

What are effects of B1 agonists? (2) - Answer- Increased HR, force of contraction, AV
conduction speed

Release of renin to increase BP

What two conditions are resistant to drug therapy and why? - Answer- Abscesses

Tumors
