English book essay

, The book
For this essay I have chosen to read a book that is called “The Cuckoo’s Calling”, which is the first
book of a seven-part series about the private detective Cormoran Strike. It was written by J.K.
Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. The story takes place around the year 2014,
beginning in the winter and ending in the spring of around 2014. Most of it happens in London or
nearby cities and towns.

Theme
In The Cuckoo’s Calling, Galbraith depicts a range of famous characters. Models, actors, designers,
musicians, and film directors displaying various levels of readiness to help solve Lula’s murder. In this
book Lula’s efforts to navigate the world before her death show some of the difficulties associated
with fame. The paparazzi followed her relentlessly, taking pictures of her and buying stories from
those who knew her. The paparazzi's obsession with her causes her to lose faith in her relationships,
impacting her ability to relate with others. Also, it is about how John Bristow killed two family
members and one of Lula’s friends just for the money. Therefore, the main themes of “The Cuckoo’s
Calling” are fame and wealth, about how those can change people, how they strain relationships,
and shatter trust.

The title
J K Rowling mentioned that “The title is taken from the poem by Christina Rossetti called ‘A Dirge’.
And contains a subtle reference to another aspect of the plot” which is Lula Landry, she is in a way
like a cuckoo, a bird that is abandoned by its parents in another bird's nest, where it will often grow
large and strong at the expense of its siblings and even its new caregivers.

A Dirge by Christina Rossetti

“Why were you born when the snow was falling?
You should have come to the cuckoo’s calling,
Or when grapes are green in the cluster,
Or, at least, when lithe swallows muster
For their far-off flying
From summer dying...”
