The research topic that I have selected is the focus on how to increase reading comprehension in

the intermediate elementary grades. This topic is relevant to me because I teach fifth-grade in a

public elementary school and I have several students who are reading below grade level.



A. PROBLEM STATEMENT

Out of my 22 students, 5 students began their fifth-grade school year reading below grade level.

There is a major emphasis on catching students who read below grade level early, but

significantly less emphasis is placed on intermediate elementary students. Research needs to

take place to identify the most effective reading interventions to strengthen reading

comprehension for struggling intermediate elementary school readers.



B. LITERATURE REVIEW

Reading on Grade Level

Reading on grade level is a major focus in elementary school, specifically grades kindergarten

through third grade. If a student is reading at grade level, that means they have mastered each of

the skills needed to read and comprehend a text at the expected level of difficulty for their grade.

Each grade level has a set of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) that focus on a variety of

skills such as reading a variety of texts and genres, complex text, close reading and stamina, and

understanding of vocabulary and language use. In addition, CCSS requires students to develop

speaking and listening skills at an increasingly complex rate as they move through grades. The

emphasis on reading at grade level and meeting the CCSS’s is high in the early elementary
