Interstitial fluid: About 20 L of fluid filters out of blood capillary walls to form interstitial fluid
Fluid surrounds cells and tissues
Contains less protein than blood plasma (proteins too big to go through capillary walls)
17 L of interstitial fluid is reabsorbed in the venous ends of the capillaries
The remaining 3 L must be returned to cardiovascular system by the lymphatic system

Complex drainage system
Interstitial fluid is carried through, empties into the veins and becomes part of
blood plasma
Transports lipids and lipid-soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K) from digestive tract to blood
