The Most Dangerous Game: A Detailed Summary

Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" is an entertaining tale of survival dealing
with the intricacies of human nature, in addition to the thrill of the hunt. It speaks about
Sanger Rainsford, a great big-game hunter, getting stranded on some mysterious island
and thereafter being pursued by the enigmatic General Zaroff. The result is a
cat-and-mouse game full of tension and suspense, as Rainsford uses every bit of his
cunning and survival abilities in trying to evade capture.

The story opens by describing Rainsford, a great big-game hunter, on a yacht bound to
Rio de Janeiro. There, Rainsford and his friend Whitney were having a discussion on the
pleasure of hunting. Rainsford suddenly hears a strange noise and leans over the rail,
where he loses balance and falls overboard, washing up on the shore of an uncharted
island. As he explores the island, he meets General Zaroff-an extremely wealthy
aristocrat with a lust to hunt animals which has grown old for him; he now hunts humans
for sport.

Zaroff's sadistic game gave Rainsford a choice: become a hunter or a hunted animal.
First, Rainsford was shocked by the very idea of hunting people, but he understood soon
enough that his only chance for survival was playing the game according to Zaroff's
rules. The after-event cat-and-mouse game is filled with tension and suspense as
Rainsford uses all his hunting ability in attempting to evade capture.

An island, in itself, becomes another character of the story, being an unkind and merciless
setting that magnifies the danger and isolation Rainsford will go through. Heavy jungle,
steep cliffs, and relentless pursuit at the hands of Zaroff create this feeling of impending
doom as one sits on the edge of his seat.
