Proper methods of describing missing/recovered property Answer - Kind of
article, physical appearance, brand, number of articles. Describe as applicable:
Serial numbers, Color, Shape, Size, Model Number, Brand, and other
distinguishing features. Treat recovered property as evidence.
Methods of establishing value of stolen and recovered property Answer - The
complainant (owner) should be asked for the original price of the property and
the condition/age of the property. If the original price is unknown, the owner
should make a judgment based on the age/condition of the property. The price
will determine the level of offense; therefore, a close estimate of the actual
value of the property may be very important in some cases. In retail theft, the
value of the item should be based on the ticketed price. - Ask owner, ask
auctioneer, blue book, ask dealer, obtain original price, determine age and
current condition, insurance appraisal.
Procedure for tracing stolen goods Answer - " Locate identifiers on property,
check stolen property file, check property through LEADS and NCIC, check
pawn shops, secondhand stores, and junkyards, may be able to identify a
suspect through pawn store records or the pawn store owner, check in house
records for any recorded number. "
Means to locate owner of lost property Answer - Interview suspect(s) who
possessed property, run article ID through automated files, LEADS/NCIC and
stolen property files, message to area departments, and local criminal
exchange meetings.
