This paper consists of eight (8) pages and one annexure (pp 9–10).
Examination rules and instructions:

- Use the area you chose for your assignments to answer the questions. This
area needs to be either a town, city, region or district with a variety of tourism
attractions.
- The answers to the questions in this section should be provided in essay format.
- Length indication: one to two pages or 350 words per 10 marks
- State the name of your chosen area at the start of your answers to the
questions.

Question 1

Use relevant examples to discuss the trilogy of tourism impacts on your chosen area
as a tourism destination. Provide at least two examples of each of the types of impacts
in your discussion.

Identify five key forces from the macro environment that influence the tourism potential
of your chosen area. Use examples to explain how these forces should be managed
to make your chosen area a competitive tourist destination.

This section consists of three questions counting 25 marks each.

INSTRUCTIONS

- Select and answer two of the three questions in this section.
- Take note of the indication per question as to which area you need to base the
answer to the question on.
- Length indication: three to four pages or 400-500 words per 25 marks.

Question 1

Critically evaluate the destination image of your chosen area as a tourism destination
and focus your discussion on the following factors:

- What is the destination image and why is it important? (4)
- The effect of subjectivity (3)
- Positive and negative influences on the destination image (8)
- Qualifying factors associated with the destination image (10)

Classify the tourism resources of your chosen area by focusing on the following:
- Use Swarbrooke’s classification system to classify a minimum of eight
resources per category of the classification system. (21)
- After you complete the classification, discuss which type of resource is the most
prominent in your area. (4)

Use the following case study to answer the questions that follow. Take note: This is
not a comprehension test, and the relevant theory should be applied to answer the
questions. All questions are compulsory.

CASE STUDY

Hermanus (originally called Hermanuspietersfontein) is a town on the southern coast
of South Africa. Located in the Western Cape province and Overberg district at
coordinates 34°25’0’’S and 19°15’0’’E, Hermanus is famous for whale watching during
winter and spring and is a popular retirement town. Hermanus is located about 115
km southeast of Cape Town and is connected to the Mother City through the R43
highway (or coastal R44 scenic tourist route) and the N2 motorway. Just 40 km from
Hermanus, you can also find the town of Gansbaai, the most famous place for shark-
cage diving in South Africa.

The climate of Hermanus is classified as a warm-summer Mediterranean climate and
