ME2550-Week 2 Discussion, Paper vs. Electronic claims

What are some advantages and disadvantages to using paper versus electronic claims?

Advantages of paper claims are: minimal startup cost, easily accessible forms, ability to attach
documentation explaining circumstances that can affect reimbursement.

Disadvantages of paper claims are: time consuming to process files, cost in printing, postage, delivery,
staff and envelopes. Waiting 5-7 weeks for payment, a major obstacle is to convince clients to hire you
for billing needs on a daily basis.

Advantage of electronic claims: receive payments in 2 weeks, use of a electronic service, no need for
printing or delivery. Increase of production, less errors, and reports sent quickly.

Disadvantages of electronic claims: computer and internet glitches, the cost, identity theft, privacy,
high startup cost of (hardware and software).

In the beginning she may incur some expenses from the cost of hardware (laptop, desktop, or
think pad), the medical billing software, and the move of her practice. But, overall no she won’t lose
money, eventually everything will fall into place and pay for itself. Especially, since she is integrating her
business with a physician’s group associated with the local hospital. They are more likely already set up
with electronic claims hardware and software. I’m sure that there will be plenty of help to get Dr. P.
Smith acclimated to using electronic claims software.
