Your personal physician has had his own practice for many years. Due to the increasing costs
of maintaining a solo practice he is joining a physician group associated with the local hospital.
Your doctor knows you’re attending school to become a medical administrative professional. He
tells you he is worried because he doesn’t think he will collect as much revenue if he doesn’t
submit his claims on paper and the new group uses primarily electronic claims.

Some advantages of using paper claims are often used for reporting special services due to an
unusual circumstance. Paper claims are used for patients who have insurance but their doctor is
not a preferred provider, this way the patient can forward the paper claim to their insurance. The
paper claim is also the basis for the electronic claims. Unlike electronic claims a paper claim
cannot be hacked into.
I do not think that the doctor will lose money once he starts submitting electronic claims. For one
you will get paid faster by the insurance companies which means he is making money faster.
Getting the claims to the insurance company faster. It will save him time because he will not be
making trips to the post office and no digging in file cabinets looking for paperwork which frees
up his staff to do other duties.
I would inform the doctor that by going to electronic claims he will receive payment in 2 weeks
or less whereas with paper claims he can be up to 4 to 6 weeks before his paid. It will help on
his labor cost and human error. I would also explain the benefit of storage which may help
reduce his building rent it saves him money. Therefore, more of the money goes towards the
practice rather than storage fees.
