Networking, 14th Edition by FitzGerald, Dennis,
Durcikova

Define information lag and discuss its importance - ANSWER:The time needed for
information to travel.

How do local area networks (LANs) differ from metropolitan area networks (MANs),
wide area networks (WANs), and backbone networks (BNs)? - ANSWER:Local Are
Networks are, well local :-), they are the networks within an organization such as a
business or university and Wide Area Networks are geographically disconnected
networks geographically with connection via BN, Metropolitan Area Networks cover
a geographic area (normally a city or region) and a Backbone Network is the network
that feeds the connected networks.

What is a circuit? - ANSWER:In simple terms a switch that facilitates a connection
(think of a light switch) a network switch performs the same function, it turns on and
directs packets of information. On a telephone system it routes the connection from
one phone unit to another making the loop of information or communication.

What is a client? - ANSWER:A client is a devise that connects to the network and
uses and shares information. A computer, a smart phone, a terminal...

What is a host or server? - ANSWER:A server saves and shares information and
preforms services such as authentication on the network.

Why are network layers important? - ANSWER:They are the packaging and
transporting of information between the different environments (Cable to Packet to
computer to output). Network layers define how communication will occur and haw
transmission is assured.

Name the seven layers in the OSI network model and what they do. - ANSWER:"All
People Seem To Need Data Processing"
7 Application
6 Presentation
5 Session
4 Transport
3 Network
2 Data Link
1 Physical

, Physical Layer. - ANSWER:The cables and rules used to move the data across the
network., This layer in the OSI transforms bits into electromagnetic signals.

Data Link Layer. - ANSWER:This layer sets the rules and sends the data. Not 100%
sure but I think of this layer as the NIC card., layer that packages bit of data from the
physical later into frames and transfers them from one computer to another, and
receives knowledgement from the addressed computer

Network Layer. - ANSWER:responsible for placing packets on and receiving them
from the network medium

Transport Layer. - ANSWER:responsible for providing communication with the
application by acknowledging and sequencing the packets to and from the
application

Session Layer - ANSWER:layer that establishes and controls data communication
between applications operating on two different computer, regulation when each
can send data and how much

Presentation Layer . - ANSWER:The sixth layer of the OSI model. Protocols in the
Presentation layer translate between the application and the network. Here, data
are formatted in a schema that the network can understand, with the format varying
according to the type of network used. The Presentation layer also manages data
encryption and decryption, such as the scrambling of system passwords.

Application Layer - ANSWER:OSI layer 7. Above presentation layer. All application
specific. Provides services for file transfers, email, and other network software
service. Basically, the desktop.

Explain how a message is transmitted from one computer to another using layers -
ANSWER:Each layer has a roll. Take the message and encode it, route it to the
correct use, encrypt it and provide a means of unencrypting it via a language the
host and client computer can understand. And then provide a way to use the
information. At each step in the process more information is added to the packet to
help it get to where it needs to go in a way that assures that the message is
complete and understood. Then the excess information is striped away and in the
end the information is back to its original state and ready for the application layer to
make use of it.

Describe the three stages of standardization. - ANSWER:Specification. Development
of a way of identifying the problems to be addressed. For example, the decision that
there is a 811.N need and how or what the problem with the 811G standard is.

Identification of choices, What can be done? What options are there and what is the
viability of the options. This process takes time and comes with baggage and politics.
