1.What key priority assessment findings are usually seen in left-sided heart failure? How do
these findings differ from right-sided heart failure?

A priority assessment with left sided heart failure is respiratory. The left ventricle doesn’t pump
efficiently causing the buildup of fluid around the lungs. This causes shortness of
breath, persistent cough, dizziness, fatigue, rapid pulse, frothy mucus, etc. Right sided heart
failure causes edema in arms and legs, JVD, nausea and loss of appetite.

2.Identify two common medication classes used to treat left-sided heart failure. What are
two nursing considerations for each identified classification of medication?

Diuretics (lasix) and ACE inhibitors. For diuretics electrolytes need to be monitored and also
I/O’s need to be measured. Assess fluid status throughout therapy. Monitor daily weight, amount
and location of edema, lung sounds, skin turgor, and mucous membranes. For ACE inhibitors
watch for hyperkalemia and give certain ones an hour before meals. Give potassium supplements
and potassium-sparing diuretics cautiously because ACE inhibitors can cause potassium retention
and hyperkalemia. Warn the patient to avoid potassium-containing salt substitutes. Give captopril
and moexipril 1 hour before meals. Advise your patient that therapy may cause a dry, persistent
cough.

3.How do cultural differences impact nurses in teaching diet and nutrition? What is
cultural humility?
Food preferences and the way they are prepared are often culturally influenced. Certain food
groups serve as staples of the diet based on culture and remain so even when members of that
culture are living in a different country.Patients in a hospital or long-term care setting often are
not given much choice of foods. People with cultural food preferences may not be able to select
appealing foods and may be at risk for inadequate nutrition. When assessing the possible causes
of a patient's decreased appetite, try to determine whether the problem may be related to culture.
It may be possible for family or friends to bring in foods that satisfy the patient's nutritional
needs while still meeting dietary restrictions. Dietary teaching must be individualized according
to cultural values about the social significance and sharing of food.Cultural humility is a process
of self-reflection and discovery in order to build honest and trustworthy relationships. It offers
promise for researchers to understand and eliminate health disparities, a continual and disturbing
problem necessitating attention and action on many levels.

4.What are two nursing considerations in prioritizing and deciding placement location of a
peripheral IV in heart failure?

A peripheral IV catheter is used for long-term intravenous access. Two considerations in
prioritizing and deciding placement and location of the peripheral IV catheter are it is inserted in
