Tactics FM 3-90 exam with complete
solutions

Types of Military Operations - ANSWER- Offense, Defense, Stability, Support

Forms of Maneuver - ANSWER- envelopment, flank attack, frontal attack,
infiltration, penetration, and turning movement

Envelopment - ANSWER- An attack against the flanks of an enemy's army, in
hopes of eventually encircling it

Turning Movement - ANSWER- A military tactic. Sending troops around the
enemy's flank (side) to attack his line of communications in the rear of his battle
line.

A form of maneuver in which the attacking force seeks to avoid the enemy's
principle defensive positions by seizing objectives behind the enemy's current
positions thereby causing the enemy force to move out of their current positions
or divert major forces to meet the threat.

Frontal Attack - ANSWER- A form of maneuver in which an attacking force seeks
to destroy a weaker enemy force or fix a larger enemy force in place over a broad
front.

Penetration Maneuver - ANSWER- In ground attack position, penetration is the
breaching of, and moving past, a defensive military line.

Penetration is a strategic military maneuver much like the pincer movement with
a few differences. The penetration attack goes straight through the enemy's lines

, and, once through, each flank turns and attacks the opponent's rear, similar to
the blitzkrieg strategy.

A penetration is a form of maneuver in which an attacking force seeks to rupture
enemy defenses on a narrow front to disrupt the defensive system. A commander
employs a penetration when there is no assailable flank, enemy defenses are
overextended and weak spots are detected in the enemy's positions, or time
pressures do not permit envelopment.

Infiltration - ANSWER- In warfare, infiltration tactics involve small independent
light infantry forces advancing into enemy rear areas, bypassing enemy frontline
strongpoints, possibly isolating them for attack by follow-up troops with heavier
weapons. Soldiers take the initiative to identify enemy weak points and choose
their own routes, targets, moments and methods of attack; this requires a high
degree of skill and training, and can be supplemented by special equipment and
weaponry to give them more local combat options.

Defense Operations - ANSWER- Area Defense, Mobile defense, retrograde
operations

Area Defense - ANSWER- A defensive task that concentrates on denying enemy
forces access to designated terrain for a specific time rather than destroying the
enemy outright.

mobile defense - ANSWER- concentrates on the destruction or defeat of the
enemy through a decisive attack by a striking force; allows enemy to advance
into a position that exposes the enemy to counterattack by the striking force;

Retrograde Operations - ANSWER- Delay, Withdrawal, Retirement

Delay - ANSWER- DELAY OPERATIONS. A delay is an operation in which a force
trades space for time while avoiding decisive engagement and inflicting
maximum destruction on the enemy. The battalion might be ordered to delay as
part of the covering force, in an economy-of-force operation, or if forces are
inadequate for defense.

Withdrawal - ANSWER- A military withdrawal or retreat is a type of military
operation. It generally means pulling back forces while maintaining contact with
the enemy. ... It requires discipline to keep forces organized and not turn a retreat
into a rout. Care must also be taken so a retreat does not damage a force's
morale.
