Answer: To become licensed in the state of MN an individual needs the following:
~Minimum of 1,000 hours of clinical contact including assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental
illness (maximum of 500 hours can be with individuals).
~200 hours of supervision by MN board approved LMFT supervisor over a period of no less than 24
months (100 hours maximum for group supervision, 50 hours max of tele-supervision).
What is reciprocity? Answer: The board will issue a license to a person who holds a current license
from another state or country if the board determines that the standards for licensure in effect are
equivalent or exceeds MN requirements. If there was no written exam in the former state/country, the
person must take and pass the written exam first.
