PRIVATE PILOT ORAL EXAM STUDY GUIDE PART II
AIRMAN CERTIFICATION STANDARDS (ACS)
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS 100% CORRECT
What certificates and documents must be on board the aircraft for it to be considered legal?
Remember ARROW: Airworthiness certificate, Registration, Radio station license(if you are flying
outside the US), Operating limitations, and Weight and balance
What are the items required to be carried with you in order to act as a pilot in command (PIC)? To
act as PIC of an aircraft, you are required to carry your pilot certificate in medical certificate or drivers
license, whichever is appropriate. All pilots acting as PIC must carry a government issued photo ID as a
means of positively identifying themselves.
What are the limitations regarding flying for hire as a private pilot? A private pilot cannot act as a
pilot in command of an aircraft that is carrying passengers or property for compensation or higher. A
private pilot must pay at least an equal (pro rata) share of the operating expenses of a flight carrying
passengers.
What documents should you carry on your person when operating the airplane in flight? A valid
pilot certificate, a current and valid medical certificate, and a government issued photo ID (a drivers
license satisfies this requirement).
Must you notify the FAA of a change of address? Yes. if your address changes comma you may
not exercise the priveleges of your pilot certificate.
Where can pilot certification requirements be found? Pilot certification requirements can be
found in 14 CFR Part 61.
What is an advisory circular (AC)? ACs are documents used by the FAA as a means of issuing non
regulatory information to pilots, mechanics, and manufacturers.
Define the responsibility and authority of the pilot in command. The pilot in command is the final
authority as to the operation of the aircraft. (S)he is responsible for the safety of the crew and all
passengers on board the aircraft.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS 100% CORRECT
Can a private pilot tow a glider? Yes, provided (s)he obtains specific experience and training
required by 14 CFR Part 61.69, which includes 100 hours of pilot in command time in the category and
class and type of aircraft being used to tow gliders.
When would you need to obtain a flight review to remain legal to act as a pilot in command?
Within 24 months of successfully completing my private pilot practical test period I would then
need to complete a flight review every 24 months with a certified flight instructor or designated pilot
examiner.
What is the minimum age requirement to qualify for a private pilot certificate for a single engine
airplane? To be eligible for a private pilot certificate, a person must be at least 17 years old for a
rating in other than a glider or a balloon.
As PIC (pilot in command), what is your responsibility to your passengers with regard to safety belts?
As PIC, you must brief your passengers on the operation of the safety belts and notify your
passengers when belts must be worn.
How long is a third class medical certificate valid? A third class medical certificate is valid until the
end of the 60th calendar month following the date of examination if you are under 40 years of age on
the day of the medical exam. If you are 40 years old or older on the day of the exam, then the certificate
is valid until the end of the 24th calendar month following the date of the examination.
How long is a second class medical certificate valid? A second class medical certificate is valid for
12 months. However, since private pilots cannot operate an aircraft for higher, a private pilot need not
have a second class certificate and must only carry a third class medical certificate. If a private pilot
receives a second class medical certificate, it will effectively become a third class medical certificate
after the 12 month period, and it remains valid for as long as the third class medical certificate is valid.
Therefore a private pilot holding a second class medical certificate holds a valid medical certificate for 60
months if the pilot was under 40 years old on the date of the examination. If the pilot was 40 years old
or over on the date of the examination, a second class medical certificate is valid for 24 months after the
month the medical exam was conducted.
How long is a first class medical certificate valid? A first class medical certificate is valid for 12
months if the pilot is under the age of 40. For private pilots who are age 40 and over, first class medical

certificates are valid for six months. However since private pilots cannot operate in aircraft or higher, a
private pilot need not have a first class certificate and must only carry a third class medical certificate.
Therefore, a private pilot holding a first class medical certificate holds a valid medical certificate for 60
months if the pilot was under 40 years old on the date of the examination. And if the pilot was 40 years
old or over on the date of the examination, a first class medical certificate is valid for 24 months after
the month the medical examination was conducted.
What class of medical certificate must a private pilot hold? A private pilot must carry at least a
third class medical certificate that is valid and current or be qualified under BasicMed.
What is BasicMed? BasicMed permits a pilot to conduct certain operations using a US drivers
license instead of a medical certificate.
How do you qualify for BasicMed? There are three things you need to do to fly under BasicMed.
First, you must have a current US drivers license and have held a valid FAA medical certificate at anytime
after July 14th 2006. Although that medical certificate may be expired, it cannot have been suspended,
revoked, or withdrawn. Second, you need to have a state license physician (who does not have to be an
FAA designated AME) conduct a medical examination according to the Comprehensive Medical
Examination Checklist. 3rd, you need to take a free online medical course available from the AOPA or
the Mayo Clinic.
After you qualify under BasicMed, are there any limitations on what aircraft you can fly? Yes,
there are. You cannot fly any aircraft that has a maximum certificated takeoff weight of more than 6000
lbs., and the aircraft cannot be certificated to carry more than six occupants, including the pilot. Also,
you cannot fly with more than five passengers, above 18,000ft MSL, faster than 250 KIAS, or for
compensation or higher.
What flight experience must be entered into a pilot's logbook? The only flight experience that is
required to be entered into a pilot logbook is the experience that is required for obtaining a certificate
or rating, completing a flight review, or meeting recency of experience requirements.
Can you give me an example of an endorsement that is required in your pilot logbook in order for you to
take this practical test? I have a solo endorsement from my flight instructor that allows me to
operate the airplane in solo flight. I also have an endorsement recommending me for this practical test.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS 100% CORRECT
Are there established airworthiness requirements for pilots? Yes, there are a number of
requirements a pilot must meet in order to be considered current. These include a fight review every 24
months, and three takeoffs and landings within 90 days to be current to carry a passenger.
How would a pilot show that (s)he meet those currency requirements required of pilots in order to act
as a PIC? A pilot can show currency through logbook records and endorsements. Landings and the
dates they a curd should be recorded in the pilot's logbook, and an endorsement acknowledging the
successful completion of a flight review should also be included in the pilot's logbook.
What is a flight review? A flight review is a mandatory period of instruction and evaluation that
pilots must successfully complete within a 24-calendar month period in order to act as pilot in command
(PIC). The flight review must include a minimum of one hour of ground instruction and one hour of flight
instruction.
Who can provide the services required for a flight review? An appropriately rated Certified Flight
Instructor (CFI) or a designated pilot examiner can each conduct a flight review.
If you do not obtain a flight review within 24 calendar months how can you become legal to act as PIC
again? If I do not successfully complete a flight review within 24 calendar months, I can seek out
flight and ground instruction as necessary to become proficient again and complete a flight review with
a CFI or a designated pilot examiner.
Can the CFI you took instruction from provide you with a flight review? Yes. A flight review can be
completed with any appropriately rated Certified Flight Instructor or a designated pilot examiner.
If you have completed your flight review and are current to act as PIC, are you automatically current to
carry passengers as PCI? No. In order to act as PIC when carrying passengers, I must make three
takeoffs and three landings every 90 days, in addition to completing a flight review. If the airplane is a
tailwheel type, the landings must be to a full stop in a tailwheel type airplane. To carry passengers at
night, I would need to make three landings within 90 days, to a full stop at night.
