Higher English: Brooklyn Cop by
Norman MacCaig - poetry analysis
Built like a gorilla but less timid

Simile - cliche - compares the imposing presence and violent nature of the
cop to a large aggressive ape. Connotations of savagery and King Kong.
Enormous size and brutal strength.

Humour- cop is even more vicious than gorilla.

The first stanza introduces a stereotypical police officer as the central
character in a way that is almost a caricature. He is presented as something
to be feared.

Thick-fleshed, steak-coloured
WC- hard to cut/ break. Connotations of something raw, bloody and violent.

Two hieroglyphs in his face that mean trouble
Metaphor- compares his eyes to ancient symbols, suggests he is inscrutable
and hard to read.
It could also suggest his face mhm you be carved with scars, or tattoos.

, He walks the sidewalk and the thin tissue over violence.
Metaphor- suggests that peace in the streets is delicate and fragile implying
that at any second, violence can erupt.
There is also a CONTRAST between 'thick fleshed' and 'thin tissue' as if the
cop prevents society from ripping apart.

When he said, ‘see you, babe’ to his wife

WC- Appears cliche but is meant literally. Seems routine, expressionless, no
emotional meaning.

CONTRAST - between his home life and his dangerous job.

He hoped it, he truly hoped it.

Sentence structure- Repetition of ‘hoped’ emphasises how dangerous his job
is. Hints at his genuine fear that he may not return. It’s an underlying
vulnerability that he hides from his wife.

WC- Emphasises how sincere he his.

He is a gorilla
