Cardiac Disorders (12-18 questions)
• Review normal circulation (blood flow through the heart): Blood comes into the
right atrium from the body, moves into the right ventricle, and is pushed into the
pulmonary arteries in the lungs. After picking up oxygen, the blood travels back to
the heart through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium, to the left ventricle,
and out to the body's tissues through the aorta.
• FOR heart failure but calories in their milk because they will be tired.
• Cardiac Catheterization
o An invasive diagnostic procedure, a catheter guided with fluoroscopy to
the heart, dye injected, and a path through the heart followed. Can be
diagnostic or interventional.
o Nursing care: pre-op assessment, prepare child and family for the
procedure; complications: hemorrhage, fever, n/v, loss of pulse in
catheterized extremity, transient dysrhythmias.
o Post-op: ECG monitor, BP (hypotension), pulse ox, extremity monitor, I&O
(lots of fluid intake), keep the leg straight for 4-8 hours, diet, dressing,
temp, hygiene (no tub baths), activity restrictions (do not do much for so
many days), pain.
• Echocardiograms (Echo)
o Most frequently used tests to detect cardiac dysfunction. Can be done in
utero. Checks blood flow through the heart/ function of the heart. Like an
ultrasound of the heart
