India was no longer a truly unified place

Mohammed III, out of modern day Iran, invaded the northwest edge of India in
1191

-Battle of Tarain in 1192 he defeated two powerful Hindu forces in what is
arguable the most decisive battle in the history of India

-Within a year he had taken Delhi, ancient city situated in a place of strategic,
political, and economic importance

-After his assassination in 1206, his able commander and slave Aybak seized power
and thus founded "The Slave Dynasty"



Muslim-Hindu relations in the new order - ANSWER -Evidence that early on in the
invasion and Muslim rule many Hindu temples were destroyed or converted, and
both Muslim and Hindu chroniclers are rife w/ the rhetoric of religious conflict,
YET....
