CHST 111 – FINAL EXAM QUESTIONS
WITH VERIFIED ANSWERS
Be able to explain the difference between Kings and Chronicles. - Answer-Chronicles
does not emphasize the same aspect of David's life (his story), the author is more
interested in other aspects.
He emphasizes that David's role as king is according to God's Word through Samuel.
Confirms David's kingship
- The consent of God's people
- The word of the prophet Samuel
- The victories he received from the hand of God.

Psalms - Answer-This book is not a songbook, but it is a five-part symphony about the
Messiah who will come from the line of David. As I show below, Psalms 1 and 2 govern
the meaning of the whole book.

Job - Answer-This book is about a righteous man who suffers great evil with God's
approval. The book has a long series of discussions about the problem of evil, that is,
how it is that God is both all-good and all-powerful and yet the righteous suffer.

Proverbs - Answer-This book is a collection of wisdom sayings and much more. Its
arrangement is very telling and informative because it begins with an instruction from a
father to a son and wisdom being with God at creation. In the ending, a gentile seeks
wisdom in knowing who God is and the name of God's Son before a virtuous woman is
described in the city gates.

,Ruth - Answer-This book is about a virtuous gentile woman who comes out of exile and
is grafted into the line of David.

Ecclesiastes - Answer-This book is from Solomon, a son of David, lamenting the
problem of evil that has plagued man since Gen 3 and Gen 4. How is man to live in a
fallen world?

Song of Songs - Answer-This book is also from Solomon, a son of David, and his bride
in a garden that echoes Gen 1-3. There is a longing for a consummation of their love
but such desire is frustrated by the waiting for that future time when one like Solomon
would claims his beloved for his own.

Lamentations - Answer-This book is a poetic response to the destruction of Jerusalem
and the exile and marks a turning to the hope that comes after it in a future return to the
land; God will restore Jerusalem.

Esther - Answer-This book is a story of God preserving Israel in exile through the
ministry of Mordecai and Esther. When God seems absent, He is actually working to
keep His promise to bless

Daniel - Answer-This book is a story of Daniel in exile, who appears as a new Joseph,
and looks to the end of the days to show the reader how to wait for the coming of God's
salvation and kingdom. The book is apocalyptic and makes clear that far more than 70
years will occur until the Messiah promised by Moses will arrive. Thus, Daniel's position
before Ezra-Nehemiah makes reinforces their message that the return from Babylon is
not THE return.

Ezra - Answer-This book and Nehemiah are actually one book together. They show
what happened in the return from Babylon, beginning with Cyrus' decree to rebuild the
temple. As we saw in Haggai, these books show that the generation that returned from
Babylon was not THE generation whom Moses promised; they were no more faithful
than their parents. We must wait for that renewed generation in the coming of the
Messiah in the future.

Nehemiah - Answer-This book is the second part of Ezra, emphasizing the attempt to
build up the walls of Jerusalem, but those in Jerusalem are mired in the sins of their
fathers. We must wait for God's salvation and ask God to remember us while we wait.
At the beginning of Ezra, the returning Jews argued that the Samaritans would have no
part in building God's temple since they were not truly Israel. Now at the end of
Nehemiah, even the Jews (who have now intermarried like the Samaritans) prove that
they too are not fit to build God's temple. We must wait for a true Israelite to build God's
real temple in the future.

Chronicles - Answer-This book is a summary of the entire Old Testament that moves
quickly to David and Solomon. It follows the southern kingdom all the way to the exile
and ends with an abbreviated version of Cyrus' decree. That is, the book anticipates a
return to the land that is distinct from the return from Babylon because Ezra-Nehemiah
already showed us that the return from Babylon was not the answer.
