COMD 5070 Week 11 Part 2 Questions
and Correct Answers
What are cases that are affected by velopharyngeal problems? ✅-Cleft Palate
-Hearing Impairment
-Dysarthria (stroke, head injury, cerebral palsy, progressive neurological disease)

Why will people with cleft palates have difficulty with the velopharyngeal port or
problems? ✅--because of anatomical limitations

How does a cleft palate occur?
(1/750 births) ✅structures in skull, specifically oral cavity, failed to meet at midline and
a gap is left there.
--in Western countries, tends to be surgically corrected w/in 1 year after birth
--3rd world countries-- children will grow up through teenage years, even into adulthood,
with un-repaired clefts.

Even if the cleft palate has been repaired what deficits can still exist? ✅- velum itself
may be to short to meet with pharyngeal wall as it constricts to give good
velopharyngeal closure.
--individuals may have residual speech problems even after surgeries have been done
to repair cleft

What velopharyngeal difficulties do people with Hearing Impairments have? ✅--
difficulty, not in structures, but in managing velopharyngeal function because they don't
have auditory feedback required to let them do this properly.
--nasal consonants are low intensity sounds
--marginal or limited hearing means person won't have sensitivity to hear through
auditory feedback to tell whether these sounds are being produced correctly ( or not)

What about Nasal consonants makes them difficult to hear? ✅-are extremely low
intensity sounds

Types of Dysarthrias result from what type of incidents? ✅stroke, head injury, cerebral
palsy, progressive neurological disease

What type of velopharyngeal dysfuction exist for dysarthria cases? ✅-a neuromuscular
deficit- signals brain sends to muscles that operate velopharyngeal port --are weak
signals and not coordinated w/ other actions needed in vocal tract.
--there is a functional deficit in activity of velopharyngeal port

, What are the effects of a functional deficit in the activity of velopharyngeal port? ✅--
elevated nasality for sounds that ought to be entirely oral,
-- VP port fails to close and remains open, and air flows through nasal cavity (leakage
through velopharyngeal port into the nasal cavity and into the nares for productions of
pressure consonants
** pressure really should be impounded w/ in the mouth for these consonants (no air in
nose) VP port should be RAISED to close off nose

In elevated nasality where does the leakage of air go? ✅-through velopharyngeal port,
into nasal cavity & into nares,
-for pressure consonants should be NO air in nose, pressure should be impounded in
the mouth, VP port should be RAISED- close off nose

Where there is leakage, what happens? ✅it allows this pressure to escape into the
nasal cavity

What does leakage affect?
(serious implications) -- ✅--speech intelligibility
--speech quality if velopharyngeal port is not operating appropriately.

T/F: Nasalization is not necessarily a disordered condition? ✅True-- can have
nasalizatin of a vowel if it appears between 2 nasal consonants ex: "moon"
--DONT have nasalization of vowels occur between 2 non-nasal sounds ex: "food" (no
nasals, no nasalization)
**depending on the consonant context, there may be a linking of the oral and nasal
cavities that does not affect quality of speech

T/F: nasal sounds have higher acoustic energy from nose and higher air flow for same
reason? ✅--TRUE
--velopharyngeal port is open to allow for production of nasal sounds /m,n,nj/

Nasal Emission is normal/ abnormal? ✅--not normal
--occurs in patient w/ severe velopharyngeal insufficiency
--air escapes through nose when pressure is high (VP port not fully raised to touch wall
)
**this is hypernasality

If disorder, leakage would be worse for? ✅--voiceless consonant because oral
pressure is higher

For what sound would oral pressure be high? ✅--when they are producing a voiceless
fricative or a stop.
**nasal airflow should be zero, for oral stop or fricative since they need oral pressure to
produce them
