Chapter 3: Getting Together

• Mate selection: the process by which partners are selected - those decided by partners
and those by family tied to culture and traditions
• Culture = individualist and collectivist
• Individualist: emphasis on person achievement and individual rights – western
• Collectivist: emphasize group goals above individual needs or desires

• Forced marriage: people are coerced into marrying against their will e.g. immigration purposes
• Romantic love: strong emotional attachment often including a mixture of sexual desire,
tenderness, affection, and playfulness

The Wheel of Love

• Ira Reiss 1980 – all forms of love and friendship develop through four processes
1. Rapport: people feel comfortable and reveal their experiences, hopes and fears
2. Self-revelation: cover areas of life or expose private feelings and idea – sexual activity
3. Mutual dependencies: rely on each other to share ideas, jokes intimacy
4. Personal-need fulfillment: when needs are fulfilled, more rapport and process is renewed

• Field of eligible: people considered acceptable as potential partners, both by the individual and
by society – one marriage at a time, same sex marriage (2005)
• Propinquity: physical and geographical closeness
• Assortative mating: process of choosing a mate on the basis of certain traits
• Homogamy: marrying someone like oneself; also refers to the similarities in unmarried couples
– same sex marriages are less likely to do this
• Matching effect: tendency for people to choose partners who are similar in physical
attractiveness
