Linux is a type of an operating system just like Windows, iOS, Mac, etc. It’s a completely open-
source kernel the central part of the operating system that links your hardware with applications.
It could be used freely for whatever you want.
These versions of Linux are commonly called distributions or distros. They provide different
stacks of software, tools, and desktop environments that are tied to the Linux kernel that
combines to form a complete software.
“Linux” only really applies to the core kernel of the Os. One of the most important aspects of
Linux is the fact that it’s open source. This means that the code is used to create it is free and
available to the public to view, edit, and contribute to.
What Distinguishes Linux from Other Operating Systems Like Mac OS
and Windows?
Linux is similar to other operating system you might be used to, like windows and Mac OS. It
comes with a graphical interface and even has versions of common software such as word

It’s also more lightweight and less resource heavy than Windows.
