What do you know about school crime and safety? What does school safety mean to you?
Give an example of a time you experienced what it felt like either to feel safe/not safe in
school and how you dealt with it.
In all honesty, I am not too familiar with crime and safety policies within school
systems. Despite knowing specific safety protocols teachers must abide by, like not letting
students out in the hallways to go to the bathroom 15 minutes into and ending each class
to avoid students wandering the hallways in case of a school shooting, and the fact that
schools maintain very little security during pick up and drop off, I do not know the ins and
outs of what districts go through to keep students safe. School safety is a topic I believe
should be of more importance to school districts as well as students, parents, and
teachers. While districts should do more in protecting students and teachers by amping up
security and monitoring during and after school hours, parents, teachers, and students
should educate themselves as to what is going on within in their schools and the districts
in terms of security, and have a say in what they believe should be done to protect them in
case of an emergency.
Again, more needs to be done in protecting those who learn and work within
schools, and it is unbelievable to think that movie premieres for blockbuster hits
experience more safety precautions at movie theaters than schools, when far more
incidents have happened in schools. While school shootings have been on the rise since
the 90s and are a problem in today’s society, outside threats are not the only thing
students have to fear, as bullying and harrassment (which can result into physical violence)
are also a problem in school systems. While thankfully, I have rarely feared of an outside
attack, I have found myself fearing to go to school because of bullying and potential
physical violence due to this bullying during my time in public school. Although I had
reported the incidents of bullying multiple times, nothing was done by administration, and
it almost felt like I had to walk on eggshells. These thoughts should not be clouding a
students mind when entering school, as they should be walking in to learn something new
and not to tread carefully around others or outside threats.
