Anterior Interventricular artery - answer Supplies
blood to the left side of the heart muscle.
Occlusion of this artery is often called the widow-
maker infarction. Typically supplies 45-55% of the
left ventricle (LV) and is therefore considered the
most critical vessel in terms of myocardial blood
supply.
,Aorta - answer The main artery of the body,
supplying oxygenated blood to the circulatory
system. In humans it passes over the heart from
the left ventricle and runs down in front of the
backbone.
Apex - answer Formed by the left ventricle, so it
is essentially the most inferior portion of the heart.
Atria - answer Receives deoxygenated blood from
the veins of the body; the left side receives
oxygenated blood from the pulmonary vein.
Atrioventricular valves - answer Separate the
atria from the ventricles, allow blood to flow from
the atria to the ventricles, but prevent flow in the
opposite direction
Auricles - answer There are two in the heart. Each
one is attached to the anterior surface of the
outer-walls of the atria (i.e.left and right atria).
They look like wrinkled pouch like structures. Their
purpose is to increase the capacity of the atrium
and also increase the volume of blood that is able
to contain.
Base - answer the portion of the heart opposite
the apex
, Bicuspid valve - answer This valve is situated
between the left atrium and the left ventricle. It
permits blood to flow one way only, from the left
atrium into the left ventricle. This valve has two
flaps.
Chordae tendineae - answer Thread-like bands of
fibrous tissue which attach on one end to the
edges of the tricuspid and mitral valves of the
heart and on the other end to the papillary
muscles, small muscles within the heart that serve
to anchor the valves.
Coronary arteries - answer The vessels that
supply the heart muscle with blood rich in oxygen.
They encircle the heart in the manner of a crown
Circumflex artery - answer Branches off of the left
coronary artery and supplies most of the left
atrium: the posterior and lateral free walls of the
left ventricle, and part of the anterior papillary
muscle
Coronary sulcus - answer It contains the trunks of
the blood vessels that are known as the "nutrient
vessels of the heart". It comprises of veins and
arteries that supply blood to the cardiac muscles
