Definition: Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the study of composition, structure,

properties and changes of matter. It explores how substances interact with each other and with

energy, leading to chemical reactions.

It is often called 'central science' because it connects other natural sciences like physics,

biology and geology.

The following are the terms used in chemistry:

1.Atoms and molecules: These are the basic building blocks of matter. The atom is made of

the nucleus and electron, molecule includes all two combined.

2.Elements: These are pure substances containing only one form of atom. Compounds on the

other hand is the chemical combination of two or more different atoms.

3. States of matter: These is the form in which substances can exist in. There are three states

of matter namely; solid, gas and liquid.

4. The periodic table: Is a systematic arrangements of elements according to their increasing

atomic number.

5. Chemical reaction: This occurs due to the breaking down or formation of bonds.
