Two resources that are needed to address the mental health needs of the pediatric population
include more funding to provide mental health resources available to lower income families
and to make more providers more culturally competent. Funding plays a major role in the
mental health access that many pediatric patients can receive due in part to many of the
pediatric population that do not have access to mental health services are from lower
socioeconomic families. Since the pandemic of COVID-19 many families are suffering more than
what they were before it financially and have lost health insurance due to losing jobs during the
pandemic. Without insurance many providers, especially in the mental health field, will not see
you thus many children and adolescents go without care. (Sorter et al., 2022) If more funding
from the national and state level went to providing more access to cheaper health insurance or
more regulations were put into place for more providers to see patients that are on Medicaid
then we could help improve access to mental health services to more pediatric patients.
Ensuring more providers are culturally competent will help to address the mental health needs
of the pediatric population because many families are not fully educated on mental health and
don’t understand the treatment options available. For a provider to be culturally competent
they can understand and respect the values and beliefs of other cultures as well as
appropriately educate and inform cultures on diseases or disease process and proper treatment
or prevention. For example, if a client and/or family is not of English speaking then it is
important that the provider use a certified language interpreter to translate for them and
ensure all questions are answered and explained. Many families of non-English speaking do not
