ANSWER: Marjane Satrapi is both the narrator and the primary character. The
story is about her youth in Iran before she relocated to Austria. She lived through
the Revolution and the Iraq War. She fights throughout the book to find her place
in the world (obviously, this is a coming-of-age story). Does not consider her father
a hero, probably because he has made no sacrifices. She does, however, believe that
her uncle, Uncle Anoosh, is a hero.
Taji Satrapi is Marji's mother. Taji participates in numerous protests, many of
which are extremely dangerous. She is a very lenient mother who wants her
daughter to receive a decent education. She grew up in poverty (her parents lost
everything when the Shah imprisoned her father, the prime minister since he was a
communist). When she went to see him, he had become quite feeble but still played
with her.
Eby Satrapi is Marji's father. He has five brothers, yet only Uncle Anoosh is
mentioned. His father supported the Shah, whilst he and Anoosh despised the Shah.
Excellent supporter of the revolution. He passionately opposes religious
fundamentalism. Very patriotic to his country (Iran). Teaches Marji extensively
about the revolt and their country's history. He photographs and records the events
of the Revolution, although it is prohibited. He is extremely intelligent and is
well-informed on his country's affairs. He knows that most stories are covered up in
Iranian news, therefore he usually listens to BBC broadcasts on the radio.
Uncle Anoosh is Marjane's uncle. Her father's brother.
In many ways, Marji's hero. His uncle played an important part in the revolution.
One of Eby (Marji's father's) brothers. His uncle, Ferydoon, was a member of a
revolutionary movement that sought to separate themselves and the province of
Azerbaijan from the Shah. However, his father (Marji's grandfather) remained loyal
to the Shah and believed Anoosh was a trader. He defied his father and went to live
with his uncle as his secretary. However, the Shah discovered them and
apprehended Ferydoon, while Anoosh fled back to his house. He was not safe at
home with his parents since the Shah was searching for him. He planned to go into
exile and swim across the Aras River to the USSR. Married a Russian woman but
later divorced. After his divorce, he felt lonely and disoriented, so he returned
, home. He disguised himself, but the Shah identified him and caught him; he was
imprisoned for nine years. They tortured him. He tells Marji all of this because he
believes their family history and legends must be never forgotten. He gets
apprehended and imprisoned again. (Immediately following the pursuit of Mohsen
and Siamak). He chooses Marji as his lone visitor and presents her with a bread
swan. Later, he is executed; "Russian Spy Executed" appeared in headlines.
God - ANSWER God is a friend to Marjane. He was quite close to Marji when she
was young. Similar to Marji's bond with her grandmother. He listens without
passing judgment. In the beginning of the story, he could come and talk to her
every night. As she matures, she begins to doubt faith, particularly after Anoosh's
execution.
ANSWER Fereydoon is Anoosh's uncle and Marjane's great uncle. He declared the
independence of Azerbaijan from the Shah. He chose himself as the little region's
minister of justice. His notion was that justice is the foundation of democracy. All
males should be treated equally under the law. Anoosh became Fereydoon's
secretary. The Shah arrested him and imprisoned him. He was about to be
executed, but the day before, his partner at the time wanted a lasting remembrance
of him, so they had a baby. (This is a significant deal—unmarried mother.)
Grandmother - Taji's mother. listens to Marji. Says she'll be Marji's first disciple.
Was married to Persia's Prime Minister/Prince. (Marji's grandfather). She lived in
poverty because the Shah had taken everything they owned. This suggests Marji's
mother was destitute when she was growing up. (A story was shared about how she
would boil water simply to give the neighbors the impression that they were
preparing something delicious when they really didn't have anything to eat). I took
up sewing.
Grandpa – Taji's father. was the prince of Persia. When the Shah deposed his
father, who was the king, he was appointed prime minister. This is because the
Shah was not well-educated and required someone who was. He was intelligent. As
prime minister, he began conversing with various intellectuals and philosophers.
He became a communist because he felt ashamed that, as a prince, he was unaware
of many of the concerns affecting various groups, which bothered him. He wanted
