Who wrote the book?

The author is _Joshua_

Joshua means _Yahweh saves_

Theme – _Victory of Faith_

The Book of Joshua provides an overview of the military campaigns to conquer the land area that God had
_promised_

Following the exodus from Egypt and the subsequent _40 years__ of the wilderness wanderings, the newly-
formed nation is now poised to enter the Promised Land, conquer the inhabitants, and occupy the territory.

The overview that we have here gives abbreviated and selective details of many of the battles and the
manner in which the land was not only _conquered__ but how it was _divided__into tribal areas.

Theme verse of Joshua

“Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give
them.” (Joshua 1:6)

Overview

The book begins with the nation of Israel at the banks of the __Jordan River__, across from Jericho.

It records the details of numerous military campaigns that defeated the inhabitants of the land.

The book ends with Joshua’s _regathering__ of the nation for his final exhortation.

The events of the book of Joshua span about _25 years_, starting soon after the death of Moses (Joshua
1:1) and before the conquest commenced.

The conquest of Canaan took about _7 years_, and Joshua’s final address and subsequent death came
almost twenty years later.

Structure of the book of Joshua:

Chapters 1-12: Preparing, Entering and conquering the _Promised Land__.

Chapters 13-22: _Instructions__for distributing the portions of the Promised Land.

Chapters 23-24: Joshua’s _farewell__ address

Preparing to Enter the land (1–5)

Chapter 1 – The Lord commands Joshua

, The book opens with God commissioning Joshua to be _strong, courages and loyal_ to him, because it’s
on Joshua to lead the people into the land that God promised to their ancestors.

Read Joshua 1:1-9

God is telling Joshua:

Let go of the _past__ – Joshua 1:1-2

I will be _with_you – Joshua 1:5

Be strong and courageous – _3 times_

_Obey_, _Cling_, __Meditate__and _Do__ – Joshua 1:7-8

Joshua speaks to the people to get them ready – Joshua 1:10-18

Chapter 2 – Rahab and the Spies

Joshua sent 2 spies look over the land – especially _Jericho______

__Rahab__, a prostitute, assistance to these spies.

She hid the spies on her roof, and, when the king’s guards came to her house, she sent the guards
in a different direction _protecting__ the lives of the two Israelite spies.

In her conversation with the spies, Rahab declared her faith, saying, “The LORD your God is God
in heaven above and on the earth below” (Joshua 2:11).

As a result of Rahab’s faith and actions, the two men _promised to protect__ Rahab and her
family when the Israelites returned.

Rahab’s name would later be mentioned in three important places in the New Testament:

Matthew 1:5 mentions her as the mother of Boaz, making her the great-great-grandmother of
_King David_ More importantly, Rahab was a _direct__ancestor of Jesus Christ.

Rahab is mentioned in the __hall of faith__ of Hebrews 11. Verse 31 notes, “By faith the prostitute
Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.”

Rahab’s actions are mentioned in James 2:25–26 as an example of true, living faith

Chapter 3 & 4 – Crossing the Jordan

This is a critical moment for Israel

Time to move – when you see the _Ark of the Covenant_ carried by the Levites (v.3)
