crew - group of firefighters assigned to the same apparatus or station
customer - anyone the fire departmeny comes in contact woth directlu or indirectly, intetnal or
external
engine company - fire apparatus that carries hose, water, and a pump. primary function is to to
provide wayer to extinguish the fire. all engines in PHX are ALS
extrication - removal of trapped victims from smashed cars, equipment, or any other place
someone may be mechanically trapped. can be done with hand tools or power tools
firefighter mentor - FF or engineer who is assigned to the training academy to assist the RTO
with training the recruit fire fighters and to help recruits overcome any difficulties they may be
experiencing
forcible entry - forcing a door or other access point with tools or a foot in order to get inside a
locked structure
grinder - cement area outside the Training Academy where mist hands in training occurs
health center - clinic run by PFD that provides medical exams, fitness evaluations, industrial
injury management, infectious exposure management, and many other medical services to FF's
from across the valley
kitty - fund created at every station and Training Academy to buy snacks, condiments, cable,
news paper, coffee, etc. every FF contributes usually on payday the amount varries but is
usually $10/pay period
, K12 Saw - gas powered circular saw used for forcible entry, extrication, and ventilation. carried
on Ladders, Tenders, squads and many engines. they have 3 blades wood, medal, masonry,
most companies carry the metal blade
ladder company - fire apparatus that has a large aerial ladder or platform(usually 100 ft) and
carries additional ground ladders and tools. primary function is to support fire attack by forcing
entry, ventilating the structure, provide lighting, securing utilities, providing salvage and
overhaul, and many other support functions, also responsible for extrication
lay a line - connecting hose to hydrant as the engine is driven closer to the fire, this connects
the engine to the hydrant for uninterupted water supply to suppliment the 500 gal carried by the
apparatus
local 493 - labor union used by Phoenix, Glendale, Tempe, and Peoria. bargains for FF wages
and benefits and participates in all functions of the Fire Department.
members assistance program - comprehensive program that may be accessed by any fire
department member to provide short term counseling and helo in times of need. the MAP can
help with drugs, alcohol, marital problems, emotional issues and family issues
PFD - Phoenix Fire Department
PIO - public information officer. a fire department rep assigned to and specializes in the news
media. the fd depends on public support and reaponds to customers in the most dire of
circumstances. requires a constant flow of information to all avenues of the media
plug - fire hydrant
recruit engine company - the team each recruit is assigned to while in the academy. usually
consists of 4-6 recruits and 1 RTO
rescue company - fire apparatus that is primarily used to transport sick amd injured. 2 person
crew that also responds to fires where the crew is used for manpower
ride along - program that allows civilians such as family and friends, ems personel, and citizens
to familiarize them with what the fire department does.
RTO - recruit training officer. a fire captain assigned to the training academy to train recruits
SCBA - self contained breathing apparatus, the airpack used by firefighters to breath fresh air in
smoky, oxygen defficient, or otherwise contaminated atmospheres
search and rescue - performed on fire incidents by fire crews to systematically locate and them
remove fire victims. 1st priority at any incident
