mentally sorting one thing form another. (selective exposure, selective attention,
selective retention)

2. Organization is the categorizing of stimuli so that we can make sense of them
(Closure, Proximity, Similarity)

3. Interpretation is the assigning of meaning to stimuli/message(past and new
experiences, others opinions, verbal communication)



Identify and explain things that contribute to differences in perception - ANS 1.
Perceptual set and Stereotyping- perceptual is a fixed, previously determined view
of people, things, or events. stereotyping is a form of this and can also lead to
inaccuracies in our perception and ultimately our communication

2. Attribution- an error that can occur when people perceive others as they do
because of the kind of people they are rather than external factors that may have
influenced their behavior. Two factors influence our assumptions about our own
and other's behavior: the Situation (environment) and Disposition (traits of the
person).

3. Physical Characteristics- can account for differences in perception. one person
may be 5'10 and someone is 5'1. we perceive it different.

4. Psychological state- our state of mind can alter our perceptions of people,
events, and things. She just had everything cleaned before the guess came. She
had a a different perception on things because she was stressed.

5. Cultural backgrounds- can affect the way people perceive others as well as
events and things.

6. Gender- socially constructed and can affect the way we perceive the world
around us. Whether you feel feminine or masculine.
