Frequency - ANSA mathematical function showing the number of instances in which a variable
takes each of its possible values.
Frequency distribution (frequency table) - ANSLists data values (either individually or by groups
or intervals), along with their corresponding frequencies (or counts.)
Class - ANSA set, collection, group, or configuration containing members regarded as having
certain attributes or traits in common; a kind or category.
Class boundary - ANSThe numbers used to separate the classes while preventing gaps created
caused by the class limits.
Note: .5 is generally used for the class boundaries of discrete data.
Lower class limits - ANSThe smallest numbers that can belong to the different classes.
Upper class limits - ANSThe largest numbers that can belong to the different classes.
Class width - ANSThe difference between two consecutive upper class limits or two consecutive
lower class boundaries.
Procedure for constructing a Frequency Distribution - ANS1. Decide on the number of classes
you want. The number of classes should be between 5 and 20, and the number you select
might be affected by the convenience of using round numbers.
2. Calculate Class width =
(max value)-(min value) / # of classes.
Round this result to get a convenient number. (Usually round up.) You might need to change the
number of classes, but the priority should be to use values that are easy to understand.
3. Starting point: Begin by choosing a number for the lower limit of the first class. Choose either
the lowest data value or a convenient value below the minimum data value.
