How must crossings be protected? - answer A trainman must protect from a point on
the ground at the crossing that they can stop pedestrian and vehicular traffic. This must
be done until the leading end of the movement has covered the crossing. Each
movement over the crossing must be made only on the trainman's signal.
Exception: Such protection is not required when an employee protects the crossing or
gates are known to be down.
