1. Main Objective Synthesize the complex iron salt and then deter-
mine the mass percents of each compound in the
salt through titration.

2. Special Procedures Reduce in the fume hood with sodium bisulfite until
colorless. Neutralize with sodium bicarbanate.

3. Find concentration of 1st subtract the standard from the volume (convert
KMnO4 to L from mL).
Find moles of Na2C2O4.
Convert moles of Na2C2O4 to moles KMnO4
(5 Na2C2O4 :2 KMnO4).
Divide moles of KMnO4 by the volume found previ-
ously.

KMnO4+5Na2C2O4+8H2SO4’K2SO4+5Na2SO4+2M

5. Oxalate Ion Mass Per- 1st take the concentration of KMnO4 and convert to
cent moles KMnO4 using the volume from titration (make
sure to convert L's!).
Take the moles of KMnO4 and convert to moles
C2O42- using ratio (5 C2O42- : 2 MnO4).
Convert the moles to grams.
Take these grams and put over overall grams then
multiply by 100.

6. Oxalate Equation 2MnO4- (aq) + 16H(+) + 5C2O42-(aq) ’ 2Mn2+(aq)
+ 8H2O+ 10CO2(g)

7. Titration Volumes ~20 mL. (Final-initial)

8. Mass percent of water Mass of crystals before-mass after desiccation=
mass of water
Then subtract this from the beginning mass and
then divide by the beginning mass x 100

9. Mass percent of iron Correct volume by subtracting standard from origi-
nal (will be MnO4). Convert to L. Multiply by con-
centration to get moles. Convert moles of MnO4 to
1/2
