1. Main Objective To observe miscibility and immiscibility through
EtOH and water interactions. "Like dissolves like"
therefore, polar molecules are miscible with other
polar molecules and vice versa. We observed that
while mass is preserved, volume can be con-
sumed during reactions because of intermolecu-
lar interactions.

2. Special Procedures -Record volume sig figs to 2 decimal places
-Sep funnel: make sure to vent and away from you
or anyone else (~3 times)

3. Equations -density=m/v

4. Finding mass and densi- -First, find mass by taring the empty flask and the
ty of EtOH and Water filled flask
-Then divide by 10 mL (volumetric flask)

Density of EtOH= 0.81 g/mL
Density of water= 1.001 g/mL (standard)
(use for actual and additive volume)

5. How to find actual and -First, find the mass of the volumetric flask (full
additive volume flask-empty flask)
-Find density of the volumetric flask (mass just
found/ 10 mL <-volumetric flask is 10mL)
-Calculate the mass of each mixture in the Erlen-
meyer flask (VEtOHDEtOH + Vwater Dwater....
ex: (15.0 mL)(0.81 g/ml) + (5.00 mL)(1.001 g/mL)
-V(actual) = m(erlenmeyer)/D(mix)...found in the
last steps
-V(additive) = V(water) + V(EtOH)...15:5, 10:5 etc.

6. Percent Change in Vol- [(Vactual - Vadditive)/(Vadditive)] x 100
ume

7. Mole Fraction [(VEtOH x DEtOH) / MWEtOH] / [(VEtOH x
DEtOH) / MWEtOH] + [(Vwater x Dwater) /
MWwater]
