Football basicsKick-off - answer-an event that starts the game, start the half and occurs after a scoring

-the kicking team kicks the ball towards the end zone, gaining as many yards as
possible
-if the kicking team gets to the ball and touches it before the receiving team, the ball is
considered downed and the receiving team begins from that point
Downs - answer-The number of chances a team gets to gain minimum of 10 yards
-in the CFL, it's 3 downs, in the NFL, it's 4 downs
Offside - answer-When an offensive player crosses the line of scrimmage before the
ball is snapped from the centre; defensive players aren't in set positions so they have
time (if they get caught offside) to move behind the L.O.S. before the snap occurs.
-results in 5 yard penalty for offensive team
Fumble - answer-when the player gains control of the ball, then drops it, the ball is
considered "live" (it's anyone's ball; the other team can try to grab it before their
opponent to gain possession of the ball)
Touchdown - answer-6 points are awarded when a team receives a pass or runs the
ball into their end zone
Conversion - answer-After a touchdown, the offensive team may try to get more points.
They can do this in two ways: a) kick the ball through the upright goal posts (a field goal
on its own--worth 3 points) from the 5 yard line (1 point is added) or pass the ball into
the end zone again (2 points are added)
Line of Scrimmage (LOS) - answerImaginary line where the football lies
Centre - answerPerson who snaps/ hikes the ball
Quarterback - answerSays "hut", stands behind the centre, calls the plays, receives the
snap and either runs with the ball, passes to a running back or throws it
Ends - answerPlayers at the far sides of the LOS
Cornerbacks - answerPlayers at the far sides of the LOS who defend against a pass
Safety - answerThe last player on the defensive team to stop the ball (set very far from
the LOS)
