Supporting a Third Force which was aimed at destabilizing the country through violence. there was evidence to support this accusation and Mandela believed that the NP and De Klerk were doing nothing to stop or get to the bottom of this violence. What happened in Sebokeng in july 1990? Inkatha members planned a raid on ANC members in Sebokeng, where they went on a rampage and killed aproximately 30 people. It was reported by ANC members that the Inkatha soldiers came from the back of police vans. What happened in Boipatong in june 1992? Inkatha members who worked in the mines attacked residents of Boipatong. As a result 49 people were killed and Mandela blamed the NP, IFP and De Klerk for the massacre. Mandela also broke off talks with the government. The massacre lead to severe divisons amoung various political parties. What happened in Bhisho in september 1992? Unarmed ANC supporters marched in protest against Oupa Gqozo, leader of Ciskei Bantustan. He ordered his men to open fire, killing 28 people. How did De Klerk try and avoid the government coming under scrutiny for the violence sweeping over SA and how did Mandela respond? He made changes in his government system, like replacing the minister of defence and minister of law. However violence continued and Mandela realised that he had to abandoned the idea of mass action if he wanted to see change. Mandela said that if the NP agreed to certain things, talks could resume. As a result De Klerk invited Mandela to come and discuss ways to end the violence. What were the discussions at the CODESA 2? Issue of Disbanding the Mk and the role of SABC in media coverage. the ANC felt there should be fair coverage of po;itical and negotiation processes which were leading up to elections. Why did CODESA 2 Fail? Although there was consensus for the interim government, there was a deadlock regarding its shape and who should be in it. What was the record of understanding? This was a series of secret talks held between the ANC and the NP as they realised that talks had to continue. As a result they concluded a Record of Understanding in Sept 1992. This also paved the way for the Multi-Party negotiations.
