1. How does your leadership style compare with the rest of the class?
a. My leadership style is transformational. Styles such as coaching, democratic and
affiliative are also popular in the class (these fit in the transformational style as subsets).
I believe that studying an MBA would likely filter people with this type of leadership as
working with team members from different backgrounds would likely require a broad
set of leadership skills to reach out to each person.
2. Has the perception regarding your own leadership style changed according to the latest survey
when compared with the activity at the beginning of the subject? What might account for the
change / lack of change?
a. My leadership style is the same when compared with the activity at the beginning.
However, my perception of leadership has developed over the past few weeks as I have
considered Daniel Goldman’s ‘Six Leadership Styles’ and the context of my own work
and how my leadership style fits in with it. I currently work as a medical doctor in a
hospital and considering my own leadership style within the context of my workplace
has made me consider how my style fits in with my colleagues around me and my team.
I am a junior doctor and so do not lead the team I am involved with; however, I act in a
leadership capacity when working with other members of our medical team such as
nurses, allied health practitioners and medical students.
b. I believe that my leadership style hasn’t changed but has developed or deepened as I
begin to understand why my leadership style is the way it is currently and how it might
change if my circumstances change. For example, within my transformational style of
leadership I can “coach” and encourage other members of my team who are not as
experienced as myself in medicine and develop their self-awareness about their job and
how to deal with patients. Likewise, I believe I have a “people-first” attitude which
comes with the job of being a doctor and caring for patients and working in a team.
However, I can now see that working in different areas of the hospital or as a more
senior doctor I would have to develop other leadership styles. For example, when
working in the emergency department I can see that the commanding style of
leadership which demands immediate compliance and drives achievement would be
